Riding Lessons for Kids — Age, Safety and Cost

Chaharnal: Riding Lessons for Kids — Age, Safety and Cost

This page answers the three questions parents ask before a first lesson: from what age, with what kit, and at what cost.

How young is too young?

No equestrian federation sets a universal minimum age for riding lessons. The British Horse Society's «Learning to ride» page says age is no barrier — its approved centres take everyone from tiny-tots upwards — and leaves the decision to the individual centre.

The youngest group any federation puts in writing is the Fédération Française d'Équitation's very-young-children pony work, which covers eleven months to four years. That is led, ground-supervised familiarisation with a pony rather than a riding lesson, and quoting the number without that context would be publishing a claim we cannot back.

The practical test is not the calendar. Whether a lesson is any use depends on whether the child can balance, hold attention for a few minutes at a time, and follow an instruction from an adult who is not you.

The minimum that binds you is the club's own, and it differs from club to club — ask that before you book.

Safety and kit

A first lesson needs no expensive clothing, but two things are not negotiable: a proper riding helmet and footwear with a small heel so the foot cannot slide through the stirrup.

What it costs

The club sets the price of a children's lesson and we publish no rate. What moves the figure is clear enough: private or group, how many lessons make a course, whether the club lends the kit or you bring it, and the city.

To compare, ask two or three nearby clubs for the price of a whole course rather than a single lesson — most of them price by the course.

Which club runs children's classes?

The directory of riding clubs in Iran, with address and phone number, is on this site and can be browsed by city.

But we do not record which clubs run children's classes — that is a question for the club itself. Ask it alongside three others: what their minimum age is, whether they have ponies, and whether a helmet is lent or bought.

Frequently asked questions

At what age can a child start riding?

There is no universal minimum. The British Horse Society treats age as no barrier and leaves it to the centre; the Fédération Française d'Équitation runs pony familiarisation for eleven months to four years. The number that applies to you is the club's own minimum, and it differs from club to club.

What should we buy for a first lesson?

Nothing yet, beyond a shoe with a small heel. Most clubs lend a helmet for the first lessons; if you do buy one, buy a riding helmet with a recognised standard, never a cycling helmet.

Is riding dangerous for a child?

A horse is a large animal and the risk is never zero; what lowers it is a standard helmet, an instructor in the arena and a school horse or pony used to children. Ask the club how many adults are in the arena during a children's lesson.
