Vamos Amigos (Vamos Amigos) is a bay horse of the Westphalian breed whose presence in Europe’s dressage arenas is known for a dreamlike calmness and, at the…

Vamos Amigos was born on May 5, 2012, in the Netherlands and at Eugène Reesink’s stable; a brown-spotted colt, the son of the influential stallion Vitalis (by Vivaldi) and the mare Hot Shot, herself by Hotline and from the Sandro Hit line. In 2015, still three years old, he was sold for €78,000 at the Westphalian Elite Spring Auction in Münster and from there went to the stable of Danish trainer and dealer Andreas Helgstrand.

His first years in Denmark were not especially eventful. Under Marianne Helgstrand, he finished only 11th in the 2017 Danish Young Horse Championships; a modest beginning for a horse whose name would later become linked with the greatest honors in dressage sport.

The turning point in his life came when he was entrusted to the hands of Denmark’s Olympic star, Cathrine Laudrup-Dufour. In 2020, Vamos Amigos underwent what observers called a “striking leap” and, within a few months, rose from medium tour level to Grand Prix level; a rapid and rare advance for a horse of his build. By the 2021–2022 indoor season, he was already competing on the FEI World Cup circuit and at the World Cup Final in Leipzig, despite moments of tension in the arena, finished second with 86.164%.

But the summer of 2022 was his true breakthrough season. At CHIO Aachen, the world’s most prestigious outdoor equestrian festival, Vamos Amigos and Dufour swept all three stages of the CDIO5* Nations Cup: personal bests in the Grand Prix (81.544%) and Grand Prix Special (80.064%), and finally victory in the Freestyle with a score close to 88.375%. This full-scale triumph made Dufour Aachen’s grand champion and placed Denmark on the Nations Cup winning podium for the first time in the event’s 45-year history.

A few weeks later, at the FEI World Championships in Herning, Denmark, Vamos Amigos carried Team Denmark to team gold and added two more individual silvers: in the Grand Prix Special (81.322%) and Grand Prix Freestyle (89.411%), both only behind Charlotte Fry and her incomparable horse Glamourdale. Interestingly, in the Grand Prix itself, Dufour and Vamos Amigos stood at the top with 81.864%, ahead of Fry with 80.838%. These results earned Denmark its first team gold in a World Championships.

Right after Herning, in a deal that made headlines in the dressage world, Vamos Amigos was transferred to Britain in September 2022 to go under the saddle of young rider Annabella Pidgley. He trained alongside Charlotte Dujardin and continued to benefit from Dufour’s guidance. Pidgley made her international debut on this horse in March 2023 at Addington with a victory in the Grand Prix Freestyle (76.385%); a brilliant start to a new chapter. This partnership gradually matured and in March 2025, this time at senior level, the pair won the CDI3* Grand Prix Special in Herning with 70.660%; Pidgley’s first senior victory after two years.

Today, in the middle of his second decade of life, Vamos Amigos remains an influential force in British dressage; a horse whose record, with two World silver medals and a full-scale victory in Aachen, places him among the most durable and decorated Grand Prix horses of the early 2020s.
