Sandro Heet | Sandro Hit
In 1993, in the green land of Oldenburg, Germany, a black foal was born whose destiny was shaped not only in the competition arena but also in countless…
Sandro Hit was bred in Germany by Reinhold Harder; a black colt from the crossing of the stallion Sandro Song, himself a premium licensed Oldenburg champion, with the mare Loretta, daughter of the Hanoverian stallion Ramino. Ramino was out of a mare by Welt As, the same stallion who sired famous horses such as Leroy Brown in show jumping and Bonfire in dressage. Paul Schockemöhle’s sharp eye, the most respected dealer and breeder of dressage horses of that era, invested in Sandro Hit’s talent from his very first days as a colt and bought him to keep him at his own farm.
In 1995, Sandro Hit was accepted at the Oldenburg stallion licensing test and introduced as a licensed breeding stallion. Two years later, in the 100-day stallion performance test, he recorded one of the highest results in his test group by scoring 115.72 in dressage; a result that immediately put him at the center of attention.
The peak of Sandro Hit’s competition career came in 1999 under the saddle of Dr. Ulf Möller, manager of the PSI sales stable. At the World Championships for Young Dressage Horses in Arnhem, the Netherlands, the six-year-old stallion was unbeatable in every class and, with scores of 9.3 and 9.7 and a final mark of 85.94, claimed the world championship title for the six-year-old age group. One month later, he also became champion at the German Bundeschampionate in Warendorf.
Sandro Hit made his final official competition appearance in January 2000 and was recognized that same year as the best young stallion of the year. But instead of continuing on the competition path, a decision was made that would change the face of the sport horse industry for the next two decades: complete retirement from competition to focus full-time on breeding.
As a sire, Sandro Hit perhaps became the most influential dressage stallion of his generation and founded what breeders call the “S line.” He left behind more than 190 approved sons in Germany alone, around 297 state premium mares, and eleven Bundeschampion winners; a record unprecedented in Oldenburg history. His offspring and descendants also dominated auctions; his daughter Poetin, after winning her class at the 2000 Bundeschampionate, was sold at the age of three for a record 2.5 million euros. Stallions such as Sir Donnerhall, San Amour, Stedinger, and Show Star also became top stallions and first-class Grand Prix competitors.
In the WBFSH world ranking of dressage stallions, Sandro Hit was consistently near the top and reached second place in the world in 2017. His genetic footprint even reached the highest level of global sport: at the Tokyo 2021 Olympic Games, his son Showtime FRH, ridden by Dorothee Schneider, won Germany’s team gold medal, and in the same competition, Salvino, ridden by Adrienne Lyle, won the United States’ team silver medal; a brilliant finale that came in the very same month Sandro Hit himself passed away.
Sandro Hit died in August 2021 at the age of 28, after a sudden and brief infection, at Schockemöhle’s farm. But his legacy remains alive; the stallions and mares of the Sandro Hit line are still among the main pillars of elite dressage breeding programs in Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, and beyond, and he is still remembered as the figure who laid the foundations of the modern business of breeding and marketing dressage stallions.
