In the grasslands of Loosbroek, Netherlands, in 2012, a brown foal was born that, a decade later, under the saddle of Dinja van Liere, would make the heart of…

Hermès was born in 2012 in Loosbroek, the Netherlands, at the stable of a breeder named A. (G. ) Gijsbers. His sire Easy Game was the outstanding son of the Trakehner stallion Gribaldi, and his dam Bukkie, a mare of the keur level in the KWPN registry, traced back through Flemmingh and, on the dam’s side, to the elite mare Ukkie from the Jazz line. This combination made Hermès one of the first approved offspring of Easy Game in KWPN; a horse standing 173 centimeters tall, who later, under the ownership of Joop van Uytert, the owner of a stallion station, and in partnership with entrepreneur Jan Anker, was entrusted to the young and rising Dutch rider Dinja van Liere.

The pair’s first international breakthrough came in 2018, when Hermès won the bronze medal in the six-year-old class at the World Young Horse Championships in Ermelo. From there, his path progressed at remarkable speed; in 2020 he was introduced to the international arena at Prix St Georges and Inter II level, and in 2021 he made his first appearance at Grand Prix level.

It was in that same year, 2021, that Hermès proved he was a horse for major championships: at the CDIO5* Aachen, he took the Grand Prix event with a score of 78. 022%, and in the Grand Prix Freestyle at the same competition he placed second with 86. 740%. These outstanding results earned him the title of KWPN Dressage Horse of the Year.

The peak of Hermès and Dinja van Liere’s partnership came in 2022 at the ECCO FEI World Championships in Herning, Denmark. This ten-year-old stallion kept the Netherlands in the medal race and twice claimed the individual bronze medal — once in the Grand Prix Special and again in the Grand Prix Freestyle with a score of 86. 900%. During that same period, he also played a role in the Dutch team in several other CDIOs and earned placings in CDI-W events such as Amsterdam and Mechelen in the 2022/2023 World Cup season. However, a fitness issue at the end of that season kept him out of the World Cup Final in Omaha, and an injury also prevented his participation in the European Championships in Riesenbeck in 2023.

2024 brought a glorious return. Hermès won both the Grand Prix and the Grand Prix Freestyle at the CDIO5* Rotterdam. But the true high point of this seven-year partnership came at the Paris Olympic Games; at Château de Versailles, Hermès and Dinja van Liere finished fourth with the Dutch team and also placed fourth in the individual Freestyle final — with a personal best of 88. 432% for van Liere, only half a percent short of the bronze medal. To keep this stallion in the Netherlands until the Paris Games, the Dutch federation supported Hermès through the “Nederlandse Olympische Paard” (NOP) support program — which provides financial assistance to owners of top horses so they do not sell them abroad before target Games.

Hermès continued competing in 2025 as well and was once again crowned Dutch national champion in July. But his season ended with an emotional farewell: at the European Championships in Crozet, France, he made his final competitive appearance — fourth in the Grand Prix with 76. 941%, eighth in the Special with 75. 486% and thirteenth in the Kur to Music with 77. 782%. That final Kur to Music was a stirring, respectful ending to seven years of an iconic partnership with Dinja van Liere.

Now Hermès is spending his competitive retirement at the breeding stallion station Stal Van Uytert and is available to breeders through frozen semen; a legacy that passes the combination of the stamina of the Trakehner with the Dutch-bred blood of Flemmingh and Jazz on to future generations of dressage.
